An exercise in defining plagiarism while researching a relevant topic derived from the film watched in the first week of classes. [The film, “Islam: Empire of Faith” is available through the Library if you missed it in class – the first 45 minutes]
A length of 300 words would likely be appropriate. The assignment is worth 10% of the final grade for the course. It is due January 14.
First: decide on a topic that raises your curiosity from the film. Make it one relatively easy to research.
Second: investigate various types of plagiarism. Record the web site address that you use for your definition of types of plagiarism and include that in your submission. (note: a simple Google search on “types of plagiarism” will uncover useful material)
Third: investigate your topic from the “first” step using sources that you have at hand or can access readily.
Fourth: write an essay of no more than 300 word on your topic in which you employ three (more if you can manage and find it fun) types of plagiarism. In an additional paragraph after the conclusion of your essay, identify the types of plagiarism you have employed and where you used them in the paper.
Fifth: submit the essay to arippin@uvic.ca as an attachment.
Assessment will be based on the following factors (among others)
a) understanding of plagiarism and how it is committed (and thus, implicitly, how it is to be avoided)
b) employment of all aspects of appropriate essay structure in writing about the topic being investigated
c) use of appropriate technical writing skills
d) resourcefulness in finding sources of information to address essay topic
